どうもあいつは虫が好かん。
それに、気違いを野放図にさせておけば、王位にも危険が及ぶ。急いで準備をしてくれ。
お前たちが持参する手紙を用意するから、
あいつと一緒にイギリスへ行ってくれ。
奴の狂気は刻々と悪化し
やることなすこと危険極まりない、
王として放置しておくわけにはいかん。

感謝するぞ。
おお、おれの罪が臭う、悪臭が天に達するほどだ。
人間が初めて神に呪われた所業、
兄弟殺しの罪だ。
気も心も一心に祈ろうとするのだが、おれは祈れない。
罪悪感にさいなまされて意思がくじけてしまう。
同時に二つの仕事を手がけて
どちらも手がつかないように、一歩踏み出して立ち止まってしまう。
この呪われた手が
兄の血でどす黒く汚れていたら、どうしたらいいのだ。
この手を雪のように白く洗い流してしまう雨が
天から降ってこないものか。
罪と正面から向き合うこと無くして、何が天の恵みか。
祈りには二重の働きがあるはずだ、
罪を犯す前に察知して罪を避けること、
そして犯してしまった罪を許すこと、それが無くて、何が祈りだ。
よし、勇気を出そう。すでに罪は犯したのだ。ああ、どんな言葉で
祈ればいいのか。わたしの卑劣な殺人を許してください、と言うのか。
そんなことはありえない。おれは
殺人で得たものをまだ持っている、
王冠も、野心も、王妃も。
人は罪で得たものを持ったままで許しを得られるだろうか。
この世の腐った現実のなかで、
ぎらついた罪の手が正義を押しのけ、
分捕った財宝で法律をも買収することは、
よくあることだ。しかし天上ではそうはいかない。
そこでは、ごまかしはきかない。そこでは、裁きは厳正に行われ
真実が現れる。そしてわれわれは
おのれの罪を真正面から見つめて
証言しなければならないのだ。では、何をしたらいいんだ。他に何かやることはないか。
懺悔はどうだろう。懺悔は天に届くだろうか。
しかし悔い改めができなければ、それもだめだ。
おお、浅ましいことだ。死のように暗い胸の内。
鳥もちにかかった魂、自由になりたいともがきながら
もがくほどにからまってしまう、助けてくれ、天使たちよ。
思い切ってやってみろ。頑固な膝を曲げるんだ、かたくなな心を
赤子の肌のように柔らかくするんだ。
それができればすべて良くなる。

今が絶好の機会だ。しかし、今あいつは祈っている。
今おれが殺（や）る。あいつは天国へ行く。
おれは復讐を果たした。これはちょっと変だぞ、もっと考えなきゃ。
悪党が父を殺す、
一人息子のおれが、報復のために、
その悪党を天国へ送る。
これじゃ人殺しの褒美に天国へ送るようなもんだ、復讐ではない。
あいつは、罪障消滅する間も与えず、父を殺したのだ、
断食もせず、五月の木々が芽吹くように、今が盛りの罪をいっぱいつけたまま。
父のあの世の清算はどうなるのだろう。
しかしこの世のあれやこれやを考えれば
父の罪の負債は重たいはずだ。そしておれは
あいつが魂を清めているときに殺すのだ、
まさにあの世への旅路に相応しく。
だめだ。
剣をおさめろ、そしてもっと罪深い機会をとらえるのだ、
酔っ払って眠っているとか、怒り狂っているとか、
近親相姦のベッドで快楽をむさぼっているとか 、
賭けに興じているとか、汚い言葉でののしっているとか、
救いのかけらもないときに殺（や）るのだ。
そうしてあいつをつまづかせ、あいつが天国を蹴飛ばして
呪われた黒い地獄へ落ちるようにしてやる。
母が待っている。
奴の祈りは、苦しむ日々を長引かせるだけだ。
